“The outstanding personal development of pupils is a clear indicator of how the school prepares them spiritually and emotionally to provide leadership” ISI Inspection Report 2016.

Stonyhurst, founded in 1593, is the oldest Jesuit school in the world.  Excellent facilities, beautiful historic buildings and unparalleled co-curricular opportunities encourage each young person in this vibrant, happy and diverse community, whether Catholic or not, to achieve their best and play a full part in the life of the school.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle of Sherlock Holmes fame is an alumni, as is Charles Waterton, the naturalist upon whose collection Charles Darwin based much of his Theory of Evolution.

Our Museum Collection, the oldest in the English speaking world, contains 50,000+ rare books and objects, including a Shakespeare First Folio, a first edition of Mozart’s Requiem, paintings by Turner and items from Pompeii.  Items from this collection are used in lessons to inspire and inform our students.

Set in 500 acres in Lancashire’s beautiful Ribble Valley, pupils have the space to focus upon the opportunities they have. Stonyhurst is 1 hour from Manchester by car, and just over 2 hours from London by train. Our facilities include: extensive playing fields; two sports halls; a 9-hole golf course; An Olympic-sized All-weather pitch, a swimming pool; 37 station multi-gym; indoor heated tennis courts; and 2 theatres.

Small tutor groups and individual attention ensure pupils achieve excellent academic results – around 70% A*-B at A level, with last year’s top student achieving 5 A* grades. Most leavers gain places at top universities, including Oxford, Cambridge and other good Russell group universities or at universities overseas, especially the USA and including Harvard. We offer the International Baccalaureate Diploma.  Top mark in 2016 was 44 out of 45 – equivalent to 6 A*s at A level and the average mark was 36.  Our impressive, global network of parents and alumni are well placed to offer a wealth of work-experience opportunity to current and former pupils.  We have expanded our languages provision to include Mandarin, Polish and Italian.

Boarding is centred upon excellent pastoral care in a happy environment, in high-quality accommodation: sixth formers have their own rooms and an ensuite boys’ boarding house opened in 2010. All boys board in year groups. For girls, there are two boarding houses: one for years 9 to 11 and another for the sixth-formers. Two thirds of our pupils board full time and our weekend activity programme includes theatre visits, sports events, trips to Manchester or Liverpool, or walks in the countryside.

We have a national reputation for rugby, winning the Lancashire Cup for the past 6 years, with students selected to play for representative teams at county, regional and academy level, and a number of alumni playing at international level.  We also have a very strong reputation for hockey, netball, swimming, badminton, basketball and tennis. We also offer a wide range of minor sports in our exceptional co-curricular programme.

Arts Council England awarded Stonyhurst “Artsmark Gold” Status because of the depth, breadth and quality of its Creative Arts. Art Students choose from Photography, Textiles, DT and Fine Art, supported by an artist-in-residence. Our Dance Academy offers accredited ballet, contemporary, tap and more, including social Zumba, Ballroom and Street Dance. Our musicians (choirs, orchestra, wind-band, jazz band, string band, brass band and soloists in 22 instruments) regularly tour to Europe and the Far East. Drama is strong, with many students participating in our outstanding school performances and some achieving nationally recognised arts awards. What’s more, we enjoy huge success in outdoor pursuits, with most pupils achieving Duke of Edinburgh’s awards each year. We have a thriving CCF – one of the oldest in the country. All of these opportunities, which include over 100 clubs and societies and a wide range of distinguished visiting speakers each term, along with close one-to-one tutorial and pastoral support, help to develop character and expand horizons. We believe the distinctive nature of Stonyhurst, informed also by an extensive volunteering programme, helps to ensure that the strong leadership qualities many pupils develop are tempered with a thoughtful compassion and awareness of others.
